[edit] General advice
[edit] How many courses?Full-time students take from 4 to 6 courses per semester, depending on the following factors:
In general, it is a much better strategy to take fewer courses but learn them well. Learn well the supporting courses (see list below), and you will learn faster and more effectively the subsequent courses. Success in the fundamental courses of the first year is therefore particularly crucial. For a successful start, listen to these tips in the How-to-study Guide and Problem solving & thinking skills, which are particularly effective for engineering study. You can also get help, if needed, from Student Learning Services. [edit] Standard course sequencesYou should adhere to the Standard Course Sequences for B.Eng. (Bldg) or B.Eng. (Civil) in order to avoid scheduling conflicts or lack of pre-requisites. [edit] Out-of-sequenceOut-of-sequence students may encounter scheduling conflicts, lack of prerequisites, or finding certain courses not offered. Thus, out-of-sequence students should try to get back into sequence as soon as possible. To avoid the problem in the first place, avoid failing any of the courses. To ease the preceding difficulties, many common core courses are offered in the evening, or in both fall and winter semesters, or in the summer as well. The Tentative Course Schedule may be used as a guide in your planning. [edit] Modus operandiRegistration in specific course sections is on a first-come first-serve basis. Students are strongly recommended to register for the Fall and Winter terms at the beginning of the registration cycle. |
